Book DescriptionThis publication follows the international study conference on the consequences of EU enlargement on Ukraine and implications for the European Union. The book is edited by Ann Lewis, a former diplomat with extensive experience of Eastern Europe, and the list of contributors includes a wide range of western experts on the region and policy makers, as well as a number of Ukrainian academics and politicians. Contents include a brief history of the Ukraine with overviews ten years after independence from the perspectives of EU and United States experts. There follows an analysis of the political progress and prospects for democratization; ethnic, linguistic and minority issues; the media ; NGO development and the beginnings of civil society. The final sections cover economic progress and prospects, and foreign policy, defense and regional relations.
